How many visitors to my website?
The questions we are most often asked by clients are:
how do i know how many hits i’m getting? or
how do i know how many visitors i’m getting?
It is important to note that these aren’t quite the same question. You get a ‘hit’ every time one of your pages is looked at. If a person looks at five pages then you have had five hits but still only one visitor.
For this reason it is better to keep a track of unique visitors rather than hits. It also helps if we can track whether a visitor is new to the site or been there before (this isn’t always possible though).
There are a number of analytics and statistics packages and services out there. Some are better than others but there are a lot of good ones.
We always recommend Google Analytics. The reason for this is it’s free, easy to use, gives detailed information and is supported by a major organisation. Setting up Google Analytics for you requires us to add a little bit of code to each of your web pages and then Google does the rest.
It is possible to just view the number of visits each day or to drill down into the details and find out which country they came from, the language they speak, the pages they visited, how long they spent on the site and many more. You can view this information whenever you want from your own computer and produce graphs and charts if you want to.
With this information you will be better able to measure the success of your site and to tailor it to the needs of your visitors. It is also essential for measuring the success of any online or offline advertising you may have.
